The Health Word

back pain

Hi Dr. Malik - I have been getting back adjustments 4 days a week for 4 weeks and my lower back is not responding very well. Is this normal and, I hate to ask this but, how long does it usually take?

Great Question! Back Pain is usually the easiest symptom resolved by Chiropractic Care but in some cases the underlying damage to the discs and vertebrae are severe enough that the answer isn't so black and white.  Unlike skin, muscle and bone joints lack high levels of blood supply meaning they are the slowest to heal and the easiest to injure.  You spine is made up of over 150 joints! You can imagine how easy it is to injure any number of them. I've had patients who have "blown out" discs that were consistent and very compliant with my home care recommendations and their healing took 8 months.  It is tough tissue until you injure it. But the end outcome was 90% better than if that patient had opted for surgery which for laminectomies has a 90% failure rate.

Dear Dr. Malik, My right buttock and leg have a sharp shooting pain right down to my ankle. Is this sciatica? I'm wondering who or what I think is a pain in my butt so I can release it/them. What else can I do? Sylvia

Sylvia,

This is something I see in my office every day and the solution can be very easy.  The pain you are describing sounds every bit like Sciatica.  The sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve in the body.  It is made up from the spinal nerves exiting various parts of the low back and pelvis region.  Only a small portion of these nerves elicit a pain signal, the majority control key organ systems and vessels in your lower body.  The sciatic nerve innervates the femoral arteries and interference in it can cause constriction of the femoral arteries raising blood pressure.  I see it every day.

The problem with the common treatments like 1. Specific stretches are they only cover up the pain symptom (which is warning your body something is wrong) or 2. Drugs which simply prolong the symptoms while doing damage to the liver and kidneys.  I would consult your local Wellness Chiropractor who would do a thorough physical exam and take any neccessary X-Rays to determine the severity of the injury to your lower back and sacroiliac joints.
