The Health Word

Top 5 Health Foods: Dr Malik Recommended!

  1. AlmondsALMONDS - I’m nuts about nuts and almonds as far as nuts are concerned are hard to beat. They carry the most nutritional bang for your buck when compared to any other nut.
  2. QUINOA - This humble seed hails from the Andes. Once considered the “gold of the Incas" quinoa is rich in protein, yes protein, magnesium, manganese and copper. This single grain can aid cardiovascular health as well as calm down muscle spasms and migraines while detoxifying the body as a powerful antioxidant. In all my talks on nutrition I give quinoa honourable mention. Make quinoa your go to “grain”.
  3. Swiss ChardSWISS CHARD - If vegetables had a pageant this veggie would win the crown. It is packed with anti digestive cancer fiber, calcium (oh yes greens do the body good, better than milk), vitamin k, a, c a bunch of b’s and a whole lot more antioxidant and electrolyte power! It’s a tough leaf like collard greens or kale, which fall a close second to this mammoth green, so it requires a little preparation. I like chopping it fine and cooking it down with garlic and extra virgin olive oil mmmmm. Put it in eggs for breaky or underneath salmon, Ahi tuna, chicken or lentils at dinner.
  4. BlueberriesBLUEBERRIES - There are so many fruits that are awesome for you but this readily available, tasty, low calorie, in-expensive berry is a dominant WHAM BAM of antioxidant punch. Blueberries have the power to slam free radical damage preventing vascular and connective tissue damage and keep the collagen matrix that holds us together in tact. In short this berry will keep you young and pretty.
  5. BLACK BEANS - Any bean is a good bean and I strongly urge you to upload all legumes into your diet as I mentioned in my American Diabetic Association article but black beans have it all. Fiber, protein, almost no calories, antioxidants (Yes that word again) and a whole lot more. Black beans have more antioxidant punch than any other bean on the planet. From decreasing insulin resistance to aiding your heart in doing its "thang", upload beans into your everyday and watch your health explode and your waste-line shrink!

Well there you have my FAB 5 when it comes to food, Bon Appetite!

Yours in health,

Dr.M
