A special Thanks to Scott Caleen a high school student from Woodland,WA who researched for this article as part of a Career Program for Woodland High School.
Imagine forgetting to tie your shoes as you might have routinely your whole life. Imagine forgetting the name of your favorite show on television or your favorite sweet treat. There are an escalating number of people who are worrying about this and as North America blows through the beginning of this millennium we are being forewarned of the impending "A" word that sends a shrill of fear into the aging heart. I'm talking about Alzheimer's. Many worry that forgetting where their car keys are or if they locked the front door could be the first signs of memory loss. No need to fret, I do this three times a day and have so for the better part of my life. If you did want to scratch the memory itch, then how about a pro-active solution? It is easier than you might expect!
Let's start with what you need to AVOID in your life.
- Let's talk about what not to eat. Trans Fats those hydrogenated fats found in cheap bakery, margarine and fried foods. Artificial Sweetners like Aspartame and Sucralose (Read my article "Dont' Dew It....")
- STRESS! Read my article on Quick Stress Busters
- Aluminum or as they say in England Alu-minium...Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin found in Toothpaste, cookware, Deodorants and Antiperspirants, and Vaccines. Talk to your Chiropractic or Naturopathic Physician about detoxifying your body and ridding your system of heavy metals. (Read my article of Apple Cider Vinegar to learn about Malic Acid)
Here's what you need to UPLOAD into your every day.
GET MOVING! Adding exercise (or movement which is less scary) increases the blood flow of the body and ultimately provides memory improvement.
GET FAT! Pick your fats carefully and add these foods to your diet.
- Anything that has Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish and nuts are good examples. Don't think you'll be able to get these from the "Golden Arches".
- Steel Cut Oatmeal. This is a phenomenal food that is a great start to the day with loads of fat metabolizing Lecithin which is also a great memory enhancer. Lecithin contains phospatidylserine a potent memory booster!
SUPPLEMENT! Take these supplements to amp up your memory muscles
- Gingko Biloba
- Acetyl-L-Carnitine
- Vitamin B12
SLEEP Read my article of healthy sleep. Get at least 7 hours of if and try to go to bed and get up the same time every day or most days. It's a toughy to build routine but the answers to long term health are there.
So toss in this good stuff and DON'T FORGET to do it everyday!
Yours in health and living to your fullest potential,
Dr.M
